Booking Confirmation & Preparation
Booking Confirmation
Our team will review your booking request and send you the booking confirmation by email or WhatsApp. This confirmation will include your rental details, dates, pick up information and payment instructions.
Required Documents Submission
Customers are required to email or WhatsApp copies of the required documents to proceed with the rental process. These include your passport, International Driving Permit (IDP), and a clear face photograph for verification. Once we receive your documents, we will proceed ahead with preparing a special tuk tuk permit for you through the Automobile Association.
Final Booking Confirmation
With the completion of the verification process for all required documents, both parties will confirm the booking. This will ensure that your tuk tuk is reserved and ready for you when you arrive in Sri Lanka.
Travel Information & Preparation
Prior to your arrival in Sri Lanka, important documents, useful travel information, tour suggestions, instructional videos, and driving tips will be sent to you to prepare you for your self-drive tuk tuk experience.

Tuk Tuk Driving Permit
A special tuk tuk permit is required to drive a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka. There are a couple of ways to obtain your tuk tuk permit through TukTuk Rental Negombo.
Tuk Tuk Rental Negombo can obtain the driving license for you before your arrival in Sri Lanka.

We will direct you to the Automobile Association of Ceylon to obtain your special Sri Lankan license.

Please note that this process takes 4 hours on a weekday. The Automobile Association Department is open on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and closed on weekends and public holidays.
TukTuk Rental Negombo would suggest choosing the first option to save your valuable time. If you choose the first option, please inform us at least 4 days prior to your visit.
A Motor Car (B/B1 Category) or Three-Wheeler license is required to obtain a Sri Lankan Tuk Tuk (Three-Wheeler) driving permit.

Tuk Tuk Transfer Service
We provide reliable tuk tuk services designed to meet your travel needs. You can drop off the tuk tuk with your luggage at Ambewela Railway Station and pick it up at Ella Railway Station, or the other way around. If you require our transfer service, you may inform us 24 hours before your train journey so that we can arrange a driver to transfer the tuk tuk. A reasonable service charge will be added to cover the transfer between Ambewela and Ella.

Train trip from Ambewela to Ella / Ella to Ambewela is one of the most scenic journeys in the world. The journey starts from the railway station and takes approximately 3 hours. The scenery continuously changes as the train goes through lush greenery, tea estates, farming fields, various types of forests and villages. The train also passes through multiple tunnels which gives an awesome feeling of adventure.
Clients are facilitated to reserve an observation deck, luxury air conditioned compartment, 1st class AC compartment, or 2nd class non-AC reserved seats. Travellers in the two luxury compartments are served food and beverages. Travelling in the 3rd class compartment gives a remarkable insight into different walks of life in Sri Lanka.

As we are based in Negombo, we offer free pick-up and drop-off within the Negombo area. For locations outside Negombo, or for outstation services, additional charges will apply depending on the distance and service requirements.

Do I need a special permit to drive a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka?+
Yes. A special Sri Lankan tuk tuk driving permit is required. Tuk Tuk Rental Negombo can arrange the permit before your arrival for EUR 40, or direct you to the Automobile Association of Ceylon in Colombo where you can obtain it yourself for EUR 30.
How much does the tuk tuk driving permit cost in Sri Lanka?+
Option 1: We arrange the permit on your behalf before you arrive — EUR 40 including all processing and service charges. Option 2: We direct you to the Automobile Association of Ceylon — EUR 30 excluding photo and photocopy charges.

Can I combine my tuk tuk rental with the Ambewela to Ella train journey?+
Yes. We offer a tuk tuk transfer service between Ambewela and Ella railway stations. Drop off your tuk tuk at one station, travel by train, and pick it up at the other. Contact us at least 24 hours before your journey.
What optional extras are available with the tuk tuk rental?+
Optional extras available on request include a soft foam-padded surfboard rack, portable Bluetooth speakers, seat belts, and a baby seat or child seat.
