Pricing

What Tuk Tuk Rental in Sri Lanka Costs

The rate is €9 per tuk tuk per day, the same in July as in January. Rent one tuk tuk or five for a group and the per-vehicle price does not change. There is no deposit — you pay at pickup in Negombo.

That €9 is the full price of the vehicle and everything bundled with it: insurance, driving permit guidance, the pre-trip lesson, and the kit. Fuel is the only cost on top, and it climbs in the hill country where the engine works harder.

In high season, roughly December to March, there is a minimum rental of 10 days. Outside those months you can rent for a few days at a time.

The Paperwork

How the Driving Permit Works

You need three documents to drive a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka. You arrange two of them at home. For the third — the local three-wheeler permit — we give you the checklist and walk you through it before you land, and none of the 2,500+ travellers we have helped has been turned away at the permit stage.

The process

  1. 1Send a photo of your licence and International Driving Permit when you book.
  2. 2We prepare your paperwork and tell you exactly what to submit to AAC (Automobile Association of Ceylon) and where.
  3. 3Pick up your tuk tuk in Negombo once your permit is in hand.

More detail, including the Department of Motor Traffic and the Automobile Association of Ceylon, is in our guide to renting a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka.

What you need

Home driving licenceYou bring it

A valid full licence from your own country.

International Driving PermitYou arrange it

Issued by your national automobile association before you fly. In Sri Lanka the Automobile Association of Ceylon recognises foreign permits.

Local three-wheeler permitWe guide you

Required by Sri Lankan law for tuk tuks. Issued by AAC (Automobile Association of Ceylon) — we prepare your paperwork and walk you through it so it is ready for pickup day.

On The Road

What Driving a Tuk Tuk Here Is Really Like

Sri Lanka drives on the left. If you have never done that, the first hour feels strange and then it does not. Traffic in towns is busy and informal — buses set the pace, and the horn means “I am here” more often than “move”.

A tuk tuk is controlled like a motorbike, so if you have ridden a geared bike it takes minutes to adjust. If you have not, that is what the pre-trip lesson in Negombo is for — a theory session and a hands-on practical run before you leave.

On the climbs into the hill country a tuk tuk is slower, and loaded with three people and luggage it is slower still. There is no air conditioning. There is, however, a lot of air.

To build confidence before you go, our tuk tuk driving guide covers road signs, junctions, and mountain roads in detail.

Distance And Freedom

How Far You Can Actually Go

A tuk tuk is built for distance, not just short hops. One traveller from the Netherlands drove more than 1,600 km across Sri Lanka over a single month with no mechanical problem, and called the price “much better than others”.

That is not unusual. Over 2,500 travellers have rented with Tuk Tuk Rental Negombo, and the line that comes up most in reviews is the freedom to stop wherever they want — pull over for a king coconut, sit by a reservoir for an hour, turn down an unmarked road because it looked interesting. A car with a driver waiting does not give you that.

A private taxi with a driver in Sri Lanka runs about €40 to €80 a day. The €9 tuk tuk is cheaper, but the cost is not really the point — the two options are built around different goals. One moves you through the country. The other lets you travel it.

More on that trade-off in why travellers rent a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka.

Logistics

Pickup, Drop-Off and One-Way Rentals

A rental has a simple shape: you pick up in Negombo, and you decide how it ends.

1

Pick up

Collect in Negombo, a 15-minute drive from Bandaranaike International Airport. Land, sleep one night, do the driving lesson, and leave.

2

Drive the island

Take the tuk tuk anywhere on your own schedule, for as long as you have booked. There is no set route to follow.

3

Hand it back your way

Return it to Negombo, or use the drop-off and pick-up service to leave it partway. One-way rentals ending elsewhere are priced on booking.

Full logistics are on our drop-off and pick-up service page.

Route Planning

Suggested Routes by Season

Sri Lanka’s monsoon divides the island into two travel windows, and planning your route around the dry season makes a real difference to road conditions. Our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide breaks it down month by month, and the Sri Lanka tuk tuk road trip guide maps out a full loop. Check conditions against the official Sri Lanka tourism board before you set a final route.

November – April

West and South Circuit

Dry season on the west and south coasts. The most popular circuit departs from Negombo and runs north to Anuradhapura, then south through Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, Tangalle, Mirissa, Unawatuna, and Bentota before returning.

Most travellers complete this circuit in 10–14 days.

May – October

East Coast Circuit

The east coast becomes accessible as the monsoon shifts west. From Negombo the route runs through Anuradhapura, east to Trincomalee, Pasikuda, and Arugam Bay, then west through Yala, Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Sigiriya.

Full east coast loop typically takes 14–21 days.
